Fruity Tales : A Workshop

Fruity Tales : A Workshop

It’s been a little while now, but the excitement following the food/art workshop Fruity Tales I presented at the Berlin Food Art Week hasn't worn off of me yet! Huge thanks to Entretempo, Taina and her wonderful team for having me over- it was so much fun! Here's presenting a little glimpse of the workshop.

We were a cozy little group, but with some really, really talented folks amongst us! Creatives from a few different design disciplines, a techie and a nutritionalist- all together on one table ready to make fruits fly! We started out by looking at examples from mythological stories from around the world and exploring the conceptual and visual analogies with food. At times, the food in question wasn’t even food - just the idea of it as a motive drove many of the greatest figures in mythology to do extraordinary things. But then again, is that a surprise? (says the foodie)

Following the visual brainstorming, we went through a short history of stop motion, seeing short clips of the first endeavours in the original Lost World from 1925 to the several thousands of 3D-printed faces for present-day wonders like Paranorman. Here's a quick excerpt--

Most importantly, we talked about why stop motion is such a great, accessible and fun medium to work with! Creative juices were flowing already as we got into seeing some examples of the most awe-inspiring uses of the technique. Then followed the mechanics of how to best execute ideas and quickly after, hands got busy splicing, dicing, cutting, playing and finally, eyes widened in wonder at the 200 odd frames in motion! Here are a few glimpses from the process snapped by the lovely Iara Guedes and Javier Blanco.

I was simply blown away by everyone's enthusiasm and infectious energy to learn. Not to mention, the workshop turned out to be full of learning for me too. I had grossly underestimated for how long we could have done this. For days! Okay, at least for a full day, if not 2 smaller sessions over a weekend (next time!) Though we had only enough time time to try fairly basic ideas, I feel everyone went away from the workshop excited, already cooking up new ideas and ready to create more!

Here are a few of the clips that were created during the workshop.

Thank you so very much to everyone who came! I think a stop-motion party is in order soon ;)
